Bespoke lampshades

Lampshades are an integral part to a room, not only because they provide light but they add decoration, colour and are often a focal point. They can tie a room's decor together. There are different shapes of shades, but so many more types of lamp bases and teaming the two together can provide a real wow factor!

Getting the right lampshade is important for some, and it's always enjoyable making a lampshade that is 'just right'. Colour matching can be difficult, but with using colour cards and sometimes paint colours, I work to get as close as possible to the colour that matches the room or decor. Getting samples of fabric is sometimes necessary if the colour has to be specific.

This 'Hummingbird Paradise' lampshade was made to complement the green lampshade and the sofa that it would be hanging over on a standard lamp. The cushion covers from the sofa were used to help decide on the colour of the hummingbirds.

These two lampshades were made for the same customer. The square lampshade was made using the frame from the original shade that was battered and old and made into a new shade. The wooden base for this shade was rectangular and looked very smart with the new shade. The two fabrics aren't the same but by using the same colours and shapes, they work well together.

Matching the shade to the wall colour can be a bit tricky as the printing process on the fabric can affect how the colours look, but samples help to get this right.

The silhouette shade - both the digital and cyanotype (sun printing) - look beautiful when the light it off, but they really are shown off when the light is on. This is particularly the case the cyanotype shades as the light shines through the white silhouettes.

For shades with the plant silhouettes customers have also been able to chose which plants they want on their shade. For the conical shades below, they matched in colour and appearance but the plants are different on each one, so they aren't identical. I've also offered the ability to chose plants for customers wanting specific plants on their cyanotype (sun printed) shade and have also made matching cushions. There really are a lot of possibilities!!
